Johanna Medyk emprunte librement à l’investigation journalistique et à l’analyse forensique pour mener des enquêtes numériques qui pointent les caractéristiques du régime contemporain des images : diffusion, circulation, captation, transformation, numérisation. Ses œuvres forment un programme politique d’observation et de commentaire du capitalisme de surveillance, tel que décrit par la chercheuse américaine Shoshana Zuboff : une économie axée sur la transformation des données personnelles en profit exclusif de quelques-un·es. Pourtant cette étude rigoureuse n’est pas exempte de poésie, et fait régulièrement intervenir chatbots et intelligences artificielles dans des exercices de narrations qui dérivent vers la rêverie, et figurent des subjectivités à venir.
Johanna Medyk borrows freely from investigative journalism and forensic analysis, undertaking digital investigations that highlight the characteristics of the contemporary regime of images: distribution, circulation, recording, transformation, and digitisation. Her artworks form a programme of political observation of and commentary on surveillance capitalism, as described by American researcher Shoshana Zuboff: an economy based on the transformation of personal data to the exclusive profit of a handful of individuals. This rigorous study is not devoid of poetry and regularly introduces chatbots and artificial intelligence into narrative exercises that meander towards dream realms and present future subjectivities.
