Capucine Portal s’approprie les codes contemporains de la représentation de soi, de l’avatar, et de la présence numérique pour mettre au jour ce que les réseaux sociaux requièrent de nous. Dans son travail, l’ambivalence entre la dématérialisation de soi par l’image présentée sur les rézos et la marchandisation morbide de la subjectivité via les objets de consommation joue à plein : c’est d’ailleurs avec un personnage féminin à la psychée fragmentée, à mi-chemin entre influenceuse et fétichiste, qu’elle aborde ses vidéos. Le besoin d’exister et d’entretenir une présence sur internet y est présenté de manière acerbe et critique de la manière dont la personnalité est aujourd’hui produite dans le miroir déformant de nos appareils numériques.
Capucine Portal appropriates the contemporary codes of representation of the self, avatars and online persona, in order to shed light on what social networks require from us. In her work, there is a strong ambivalence between the dematerialisation of the self via the image presented on rézos (in French, networks are “réseaux” and this is a slang version of the term) and the morbid commodification of subjectivity via consumer objects: she even uses a female character with a fragmented psyche – part influencer part fetishist – in her videos. The need to exist and maintain an online presence is presented here in an acerbic and critical way, concerning the way in which personality is currently produced in the funfair mirror of our digital tools.
